Good Morning,
The heavy smoke that is currently in our area of FBIR is from the 92 large wildfires currently active and concentrated in Alberta, Canada.
Alberta declared a state of emergency a couple weeks ago from 113 wildfires that have so far burned over a million acres. Currently, there are still 92 active wildfires burning in that province. Fires also have broken out in the provinces of British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
The current cold front coming through the Great Plains area is pushing the heavier smoke closer to the ground, and with the wind also being affected by that cold front today, the smoke will be thick.
The weather forecast for today gives a 60% chance of precipitation for FBIR, so that will help some, but we can expect this smoke to be in our area over the next week at least, but potentially longer as the wildfires burn to the north in Canada.
Be advised there is currently no concern of any local fires burning in our area, so the smoke is entirely from the Canadian wildfires. (See attached FireSmoke Map Image)
Wildfire Smoke in large concentrations does affect Air Quality, so please continue to monitor the conditions as you would local weather. Currently, the Air Quality in our area is listed in in the Good Category, but is expected to move to the Moderate Level, and then to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Category later today with the winds sustaining from the north. (See attached Air Quality Dashboard Image) The heavy smoke staying at surface level could lead to breathing problems for people who are more susceptible to smoke, such as young children, the elderly, and people with lung and heart issues. Please consider rescheduling any planned outdoor activities that involve these population groups until the air quality improves.
We have these emergency preparedness references listed below on our department webpage https://www.mhanation.com/emergency-operations-center for your convenience.
